Their are currently 12 ranks that you can get by posting, the more you post the higher your rank goes.

so for example someone makes 1 post and is promoted to recruit, and he then makes another and is now an apprentice with 2 posts , and so on. The final rank is at 60 posts and after you have made 70 posts you get into the officer ranks, which can only be gained by playing.
